Lots of Appendectomy Complications!

Post a new topicby sickofmyappendix on Sun Apr 20, 2008 9:12 pm

I am writing this to see if anyone out there has suffered anything close to as many complications from this surgery as I have! I went to the Hospital at 1:00 am Easter morning (March 23) and within one hour they determined via a CT Scan that my appendix needed to come out. The surgeon was there within another hour. The surgery was performed so quickly. After the surgery my surgeon told me that my appendix had not ruptured. I spent a day in the Hospital and was feeling like a million bucks within 3 days of the surgery.....then came Friday March 29. Again, by 1:00am severe pain, so bad I could barely drive myself (or stand for that matter) to the Hospital. One of my surgeons associates did another CT Scan which revelied a baseball sized hematoma. He said he was confident that my body would reabsorb it and sent me on my way, told me to call Monday morning if I didn't feel better. Well, I felt worse by Monday, so I called, and was seen on Tuesday by my surgeon who put me immediately back into the Hospital. I had another surgery the next day to remove the blood clot. A drain was put into my stomach. Unfortunately the infection had spread through my body so I spent 6 days in the Hospital until I was able to get my temperature down to a normal range. Thought I was out of the woods...but, alas, no. I end up back at my surgeons office 6 days later...more excruciating pain. Another CT Scan and another "pocket of blood" has popped up. So, they aspirated the area via another CT Scan and put in another drain. That was 1 1/2 weeks ago. That drain is now clogged, so tomorrow am going in for them to try to unclog the drain. My surgeon tells me ultimately they may remove the drain, and sort of employ a "wait and see" approach to see if my body reabsorbs whatever the clogged drain did not discharge. He has told me that there still remains a possibility that I may have to go in for a surgery where they do a "bacterial wash" of the entire area, and check to make sure there is no "perferated colon". Ok, well, this has been one month, and I was in tears at my surgeons office telling him the other day I need my life back. Until a month ago I was a very active 33 year old female, and now just try to get through the day, maybe work a few hours, and call it good. I am in so much pain. Just curious, if anyone else out there has had any similar situation, and if so, what was the resolve for you? Honelsty I still like and trust my surgeon, but I want my life back!
