Colon ResectionOn July 28, 2008 I had to have both left and right side (Ascending and Sigmoid) removed (Laproscopically) leaving only the upper portion of the colon remaining and the rectum. Well today is day 8 I came home from the hospital on day 6. Much sooner than I had anticipated.

Re: Colon ResectionI had 10 inches of sigmoid colon removed on 4/25. I am still "going" often, about 6-8 times a day. With careful diet and meds, I can control the timing a bit better. Afternoons are pretty good most days now.
You asked about eating. I have discovered that meat, fat and processed foods really cause me to spend all day in the bathroom. Whole grains, fruits, veggies and lean protein like fish or soy food help. Fiber added a few times a day, like Metamucil is VERY important. Add it gradually or you will be gassy. It absorbs water and provides bulk for movement. I also take Lomotil to slow down movement, but I am still experimenting with the dose. Too much causes the opposite problem and cramping. They tell me I will slowly improve, but I am getting impatient! I am better than I was, it's more annoying than anything. I have control now, I can hold it for a few minutes rather than 30 seconds like before. If I need to leave early in the mornings, my doctor suggests an enema to speed up the process. I found it's not as bad as I expected, but still an inconvenience. I am also told the body adapts. Let's hope it does so quickly! I hope this helps. Good luck to you!
