Colon Resection

I am a 56 year old female who has had three attack of Diver over the last two years with none requiring hospitalization. My dr. suggests a resection and I am wary. I would appreciate the general consensus of those of you out there who had it done - or didn't. He says basically it will handle the problem and likely no reoccurance but it is major surgery. I get conflicting views about recovery. Please give me your thoughts as I am nervous and confused as to what to do. Thanks so much

I am facing colon resection surgery and I am also in doubt as to what to do. I am 58 years old and have had at least one bout of diverticulitis a year for the past 5 years. Did you have your surgery?

I just had the surgery 3 weeks ago and I went back to work after 12 days a I feel great ---why not get the surgery it will save you from a ruptured colon and then things will get worse.I am 57 female.

I am a 57 year old female and I have or had diver I still have some but I had the surgery I had 14 inches of my colon removed --my colon was in bad shape inflamed--sticky whenever that means and bad diver.was in the hospital for 5 days and went back to work in 12 days.I had open surgery so I had the staples.I feel great now.out walking everyday.No restrictions on eating just get more fiber.

Yes I had the surgery eight weeks ago - all went fairly smooth and my bowels are well adjusted now. I do have some finicky tummy issues with some gas and ccramping from time to time but the incision healed very well and I'm back to gardening and walking the dog three miles plus. I did have a urinary tract infection post surgery because the hopsital personnel didn't drain trhe cath properly but a week on microbid did the trick. Thank you for these words of encouragement -- I'm having a sigmoid bowel resection (lap procedure) in two weeks. I, too, have put this surgery off for about a year. But, after 4 attacks of diverticulitis in 2.5 years, I gave up the fight and realized that I should have the surgery. As a health care professional myself, I realized the risk of complications (not to mention perforation) increases with every attack of the big "D." I also started to develop a resistance to the antibiotics (Cipro, Alinia) and this was disturbing to me. So, all of you out there who are debating this issue, don't wait until you have a complication, have the surgery while the bowel is "resting", i.e between attacks.

Hi Marcye:

I did have the surgery a year ago and did not have any but minor complictations immediately after surgery which they were able to fix and then I was fine. Other than a UTI from the catherer which is pretty common all went fine. I haven't had an attack since the surgery in Feb 08 so I assume the problem part of the colon is now gone. I had it done laproscopiclly which is much less invasive and was home in five days and it took a few months to be back to absolutely normal - no pain at incision site and bowels pretty much perfect.

I am 31 years old and I'am scheduled to have the resection surgery performed May 1st 2009. I was scheduled to have the procedure done in one laproscopic surgery however I waited and waited and then finally the colon perforated.

My emergency surgery was December 28th 2008. I was in the hospital for seven days. It drove me absolutely crazy.

If you are able to complete the resection in one suregery you should do it. I am concerned about my second surgery and not looking forward to it. I am however looking forward to eliminating this colostomy bag.

I wish all of you luck with your procedures.

I will be thinking about and praying for you . In the long run you will be better - just try to stay positive I know its hard and just remember many of us have been through this and are now successfully healed. Good Luck.

Hi Gnorris51,

I appreciate your kind words and your prayers. I have been thinking about this proceduere over and over. This will be the best for my self and my family. I have a three year old son who "dosen't want Dady to have it any more".

It will be a little rocky at first but the human body is an amaizing thing.
