Dissability after Resection

Post a new topicby SandraD on Mon Jul 28, 2008 8:57 pm

I had a lower colon resection on 4/25. While I am better and not having so many "episodes" in the afternoons if I watch my diet and take meds, I don't seem well enough (due to running to the potty) to work my usual 8-5 pm job. Mornings are always spent in the bathroom and most evenings. I can't see myself ever being able to sit in commute traffic and working that many hours without being in the potty!

My doctor says to work part time or work from home. Well, that would be fine if I could find something and it paid well enough!

Have any of you applied for Social Security Disability with any luck? I have been thinking about it because I just can't find something that will work for me and allow so much potty time.

Thanks!

Hi sandra. I have just joined this site and hopefully be able to communicate with people in the same situation as my poor 79 year old mother.

She has had a bowel resection 9 years ago and also reconstruction of pouch. she is continually suffering with frequent bowel attacks quite often. then theres the severe rashing and burning and the constant disconfort through the night because of urges. I feel so helpless and so depressed seeing her in such discomfort.

I was wondering how you are coping and what you eat and do to manage it?

Kind Regards

Emily

My name is Art. In 2004 I had a resection done. in 2005 It was hard to work, so I was given an ealy retirement. Only because I could not do a new task postion at work or get fired. However, drawing a retirement paid for the government it was not enough to live on. I try part work for 6 months and I just could stay out the bathroom. I took a job cleaning bathrooms so I could be near a bathroom. But That didn't work out. So I went to a lawyer and told him I unexpected bowel movements that i must disable. He took my case and won I draw a good 1500 hundred every month which helps. But I still live near a bathroom for 90% of the time. Can someone geve me advice on to handle this dissablility?

Hi, I'm Marggie and I'm 55 yrs young and an 8 yr colorectal cancer survivor. I will most likely have to have another colon resection (at the very best) and at the very worst they will take out most of what's left of my colon (I had 10 inches total removed in 2001--I had cancerous tumors in 2 places in my colon). My question to you is how much of your colon do you have now? what kind of meds are you on? What did your docs tell you about quality of life after surgery.....I really need to hear from someone else you has been thru this experience....thanks! Marggie
