How many resections can be done?

Post a new topicby Quilter49 on Wed Oct 03, 2007 3:44 pm

Three and half years after my first resection I am scheduled for a second due to diverticulitis The first was done with 12 inches removed. How many times can this be done without the colostomy entering the picture? Does the resection area have to be removed each time?

The term resection means removal so the resected area will be removed. You can get quite a bit of length from the colon by taking down its attachments, good luck

just had a double colon resection and they removed about a foot of colon at each resection. my surgeon said he saved about 2 feet of colon.a second resection should leave you enough colon left so a
colostomy should not be a concideration.
best of luck.

Was this two different surgeries? My surgeon just told me it couldn't be done twice because of the integrity of the rectal muscles. I had the first surgery for diverticulitis four years ago and now it is a problem again. The repeat diverticulitis is supposed to only be 1-10% Lucky me!

my surgery was an open resection with both resections done at the same time .my surgeon did not want to do two separate resections.it appears your first resection was very close to your rectum area.if your surgery requires resecting your first surgery, there may not be enough rectal muscle to function properly.good luck with any decision you make
norm.
