laxatives/stool softeners after surgery

Post a new topicby DonnaGo on Wed Mar 12, 2008 11:18 am

I am now 8 days out of surgery and feeling great but was told by surgeon to take Milk of Magnesia and stool softeners. I am doing this and having loose movements, but am concerned about whether I am going to be dependant upon laxatives. Does anyone have any experience with this? My husband keeps telling me he thinks that for the first few weeks I should do w hatever is necessary to keep my bowls loose and movements easy until I am more healed. Any thoughts?

I had colon resectioning done Jan. of 07. After my surgery I couldn't have a bowel movement either. Doc said to take Milk of Mag. I did. Went back for check up 2 months later told her I was still having to take laxitives. She said I would come out of it. Never did. To this day I still have to take laxitives. I have done every kind there is some work others don't. The ones that worked eventually quick working. I have now found one that works and has been for 5 months. It has no side effects, or I don't feel like I have to stick around the house. I don't know if I have helped in anyway.

I had my section done 8 days ago and I have had one BM since then, and that only with the aid of a generic senna laxative and things hurt like hell down there during and after....no blood , tho. It feels like things are starting to build up again and I have been on a soft/liquid diet, yet things still arent right down there. What is the one laxative you have found that works well?

It is called Senna-S. I can only find it at a Hy-Vee pharmacy. It is only $8.00 for 100 pills. I take three every other night, before I go to bed. It works the next day after waking up. No sudden urges. No sharp cramping.

Thank you for replying Mollie...and thank you for the info! Since I wrote the post above, I am now not having probs whatsoever being "bound-up"....in fact exactly the opposite! I have movements several times a day, always loose to the point of liquid and it feels like my insides want to continue and come right out too :( Having a hard time regulating everything. Hopefully this, too, will pass and things will get back to normal....they took approx. 10" of my large intestine and was told it would be a while for things to normalize. My diet is a soft one with no aids or additives.

Thanks again!
