lots of complicationsMy mom had a colon resection almost a month ago. The doc ended up having to remove much more than originally thought and she ended up having a permanent colostomy bag. The surgery was suppose to last only 3 hours and it took 8. She has been in the hospital this whole time and has been bounced back and fourth between the ICU and a regular room. She has stopped breathing twice, developed a severe fever (104F) and had numerous infections. She is now slipping into kidney failure.
I dont know how much more moms fragile body can take. My mother-in-law was telling me about a neighbor she had that recently passed away due to complications from the same type of surgery. It is believed that the doctors didnt make sure she was "clean" inside when the surgery was performed. How can you know if this is the case? Does anyone have any idea what, if any, tests can be done to make sure my mom was cleaned out before and after the resection? I dont feel I would get an honest answer from the doctors (no offense, just past experience keeps from trusting them). Has anyone heard of complications because of this and how do I find out? Any ideas would be so appreciated. I just feel completely helpless as I watch my mom decline more and more everyday.
Re: lots of complicationsDr. Robert Cloud at Medical City Dallas just operated on my boyfriend and he is really good. Named Dallas best several . years in a row. Alot can go wrong and the infection is probably coming from a small leak somewhere in the resection. A Cough could have caused it etc. This is a fragile area. I would ask for a second opinion from a Colon Specialist and don't waste time doing it just because you don't trust the Dr.s it is your moms life and with what you are describing it is URGENT.
