Possible resection surgeryHello,
I'm interested in past experiences anyone may be willing to share. I am a 31 year old male that has had two episodes of diverticulitis My first occurred at the beginning of this year which required hospitalization due to an abscess that had formed and circumflexed my colon. I am currently recovering from the second episode and taking oral antibiotics and do not require any hospitalization, knock on wood. I am some what worried about having a possible resection performed due to my profession. I work as a Firefighter/ Paramedic and any serious complications could end my career. I also do not want to be dealing with this problem for the rest of my life and seriously considering having the infected/ diseased portion of my colon removed. I have done some research on my own but would like to here personal accounts from individuals that have experienced/ underwent the surgery. Thank you for reading my post and also for replying.
Re: Possible resection surgerywhen i read your post i was surprised at how much it sounded like my present situation ,and although your wrote back in may, i am wondering if you did have the surgery and if so, how it went?
I hope the answer is "FNE" and you are fully recovered by now. I am desperatly afraid to have this done . I recently had ovarian cancer surgery at NY MSKCC and had a pretty tough time of it with an unexpected complication (paralytic illius ) .I have tried so hard to recover from the entire experience of such major surgery and now may have to do it all over again .
Re: Possible resection surgeryhi there,
I am 47 years old and have had at least 5 episodes of diverticulitis which was very painful each time, recently in July 2008 i got sick again, this time with very painful urination, after being treated for everthing from urinary infection to prostate infection i was still very sick and getting worse. after having a CT scan i was sent to a surgeon that diagnosed me having diverticulosis, i had a 5 inch abscess outside my colon laying on my bladder causing the urinary pain. after draining the abscess thru a tube into my belly i was told i needed surgery to remove part of my colon, i had resection surgery Dec. 10, 2008 and they removed 14 inches of my colon, i have done very well after surgery only a few complications such as bloating for about 3 weeks and hemorrhoide pain. i was released from my surgeon in 6 weeks on Jan. 20, 2009 and i am doing great
Re: Possible resection surgeryHi, I'm Marggie and I'm in very good overall health except for my colon. I had a colon resection at 48 yrs. young (8 yrs ago)...with a very good outcome, I had 10 inches removed (I had cancerous tumors in 2 places in my colon)...it took me about 6 weeks to heal completely and feel like my old self after the surgery. I had my surgery done at a teaching hospital in Chicago (RUSH)with very good surgeons!! I would not do this surgery with anyone who hasn't done a ton of them.....I am faced at present with having to possibly do another bigger resection and trust me I am asking questions as well....good luck to you!
