Resection side effects - bladder and flatulence - post op

Post a new topicby lansur on Mon Feb 23, 2009 5:18 pm

I am a 63 year old male who was quite fit and active -e.g. 6 marathons - prior to surgery. I had 40 cm (16") of large bowel removed due to diverticulitis in September of 2006. I have had loose stool ever since and a constant "diarrhea feeling" with chronic and rancid flatulence. Also, I have had difficulty urinating if I allow my bladder to become full (which I naturally try to avoid where possible). It is painful to urinate if my bladder becomes too full and I have to go 2 or 3 times in order to empty my bladder. My bladder and prostate have been checked out and they seem to be normal and disease free. I have been on dilaudid for ACDF (neck fusion) surgery 4 months ago and that pain killer which is supposed to cause constipation does not seem to affect my bowel movements. In fact, if and when I get off this medication, I will likely be even looser than I am now. I have tried probiotics unsuccessfully and have had my stool checked with negative results. Are there any suggestions on how to resolve these discomforting, painful and quite embarrassing problems?

I am a 55 year old female and I had surgery 2/17/09 and I have pain at night when my bladder is full.
I also have a lot of gas and have pain in my left side area.I also have blood in my stool and when I went to the Dr. Friday he told me it could be normal. I have to go back in 6 weeks. I still have several bowel movements a day. I was told to start adding more fiber to my diet. He told me to do it slowly. Do you have a lot of fiber in your diet? I just worry about what to eat. I sure do not want to make anything worse. I tried to get him to give me a dietary plan.
