Life after colostomyMy brother in law is a quadripaligic. His dr is recommending a colostomy for a few reasons. One he has a hernia and the other is he is constipated all of the time and needs assistance with going to the restroom. He is worried about life after the colostomy He has been told that it is "disgusting" and hard to live with, that the bag falls off all of the time and is hard to manage. Any input on life after and the pros and cons would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Re: Life after colostomyI have had my colostomy for over 10 years now.. while it can be messy, it can be done cleanly too.. a lot depends on his helper.. having a colostomy is a "no sissies" type deal.. squeemish helpers need not apply.. lol..sorry
it doesnt fall off all the time.. the adhesives on the bags are quite good with certain bags.. not so good with others.. but i am a truck driver, so i punish my colostomy bags much more than others.. also, they have 2 piece bags.. there is a locking wafer that is applied to the stoma site.. then the bag can be removed for cleaning and reattached to the wafer after cleanup.. but you must be careful to make sure you get the bag securely reattached to the wafer.. otherwise, it can come off seemingly for no reason at all.. when actually it wasnt attached completely.. so, i dont see that it would be a big problem.. it would actually help with the constipation because the feces would be softer.. that is because it has a shorter distance to travel to get out of the body..but you must wash your hands after every contact with the bag.. you are dealing with feces.. also, a colostomy has a mind of its own.. It goes when It wants to, and it doesnt always let you know before It happens.. with him being quadrapaligic, all he would be able to do is apologize for the sound it makes.. if you need more info or need to speak to me directly.. let me know in this forum and we will see what we can arrange to communicate..
