hemorroidectomy I had surgery a week ago. I had little pain, had a b.m. the next day ….worked 2 days later. By the fourth day I had excruciating pain; called the drs. office, told them I had started bleeding upon having b.m.s, thought maybe I had another anal fissure ( had one before). The “nurse” told me everything was normal unless blood was running down my legs as I walked. After getting a script for a numbing cream I feel a bit better.I’m wondering if this is normal?

Re: hemorroidectomyI would love to have a hemorroidectomy. This is what is irking me. I lead a very healthy lifestyle. I'm only 26 years old. I eat so many vegetables, I feel like I own the farm. I exercise everyday, I drink my 2litres of water and I'm definitely not obese. My BM are perfectly fine but I get hemorrhoids! They'll just flare up for no particular reason. I don't get it! Sometimes they'll flare up for about a week and then they'll go away. I'm considering getting a hemorroidectomy but I'm really scared and I don't really feel comfortable with loads of people poking and prodding me "down there."
What I would like to know is, how long does a hemorroidectomy procedure take? How long is the healing process? What's involved? Is a hemorroidectomy like a full on surgery or is it a straightforward procedure?
Re: hemorroidectomyI still have bleeding with a BM. I've had two different surgeons tell me that this is okay. I had surgery 16 weeks ago. Six weeks ago the surgeon told me to see him if it wasn't better in 6 weeks, so I have to go back for a recheck. I hope your recovery goes better than mine.
In reply to the 26 year old considering a hemorrhoidectomy. I have to say that I would manage it medically as long as I can. I wish I had never had the surgery. I have been in constant pain for the past 16 weeks. Only recently has the pain decreased enough to see a glimse of hope. I first got hemorroids with the birth of my first child. I had the surgery 2 weeks after the birth of my second child. My hemorrhoids never hurt as bad or for as long as I have hurt since surgery. I would recommend that you consider this. After surgery I couldn't sit, stand, walk, lie down, have a BM, urinate, or pass gas without considerable pain. I couldn't hold it in...if I had to have a BM...I had to go then because it hurt too bad to try to hold it in. I would cry on the toilet with every BM for weeks. There is no way I could have gone to work or spent time away from a toilet where I could immediately sit in a sitz bath and cry. I'm still in pain and discomfort 16 weeks later. If I had been in pain every day anyway, then maybe I could see the good of the surgery, but I wasn't and now I am. Good-luck with whatever you decide.
Re: hemorroidectomyGod, that sounds awful! I'm so sorry to hear about your pain.
I recently went to the doctor to go and get what I thought were hemorroids checked out. As it turns out, I only have a skin tag (created from hemorroids that weren't treated properly... must've been from when I was younger) and the Doctor said that she could remove them and that it would only take a few minutes. Apparently skin tags can flare up if they're irritated. Mine are never itchy, but I feel like I've got a tail hanging out. It just looks ugly that's all. I've only ever heard of people experiencing pain and misery when having hemorroidectomy's. One man I'd read about was really positive and mentioned that while he experienced a bit of discomfort this was what he wanted because he wanted to feel normal again. He said the "Roids" were killing his sex life and any hope of having any confidence in himself. I'm not sure if this will comfort you, but alot of the people that I'd heard had recommended to stay away from the pain meds as they caused constipation. Rather they stuck with nurofen and drank tonnes of prune juice and water (if that's any help). They also said that if they needed to go to the bathroom, they'd do it in the sitz bath because it brought a little more relief. Whilst this sounds gross, at least its a little easier. I really do feel for you!! Thanks so much for your response to my posting. I wish you all the best with your recovery.
Re: hemorroidectomyWell, I had my skin tag removed the day before yesterday and I'd have to say that whilst I'm a little sore at the moment I feel on top of the world. If I'd have known that it was that easy I would have done it years ago.
The Doctor cauterized it off and stitched me up, so every day I've been drinking tonnes of water, fruit juice (especially prune juice) and lots of soft mashed foods. The doctor says that the stitches will be healed within the week, but that the fibres inside me won't be healed til about a month maybe two months later. I think she did a brilliant job!! I can't wait to be healed again. I feel great and overrall HUMAN!! Its wonderful!
Re: hemorroidectomyThat's great! I hope everything continues to go well.
Re: hemorroidectomyFeeling your pain! 3 1/2 weeks ago I had hemorroidectomy, sphincterotomy and anal fissure repaired. Surgery was almost 3 hours and I spent the night in hospital. Also found out after throwing up all night I am allergic to demerol! Was very hard to urinate the first time and was very glad to have nurses on hand to help me that first night as I was so ill and in pain. I highly recommend to anyone having these procedures if your insurance pays for it STAY in hospital that first night. I was so incredibly swollen and bruised! I could not imagine going home afterwards. Recovery is still ongoing. My doctor said I had extensive work done, many internal and external hemmoroids, and the anal fissure, which was my main reason for the surgery, was very large.Plus there were 2 large hemmoroids on either side of it. I had been in extreme burning pain for 3 months because of it.I was difficult to even drive, sit or stand! Going to the bathroom now is very different after the sphincterototmy. Tends to be easier as long as I take softener (although I have started becoming somewhat constipated again) Doesnt hurt as much to have bm now, but still bleeding a good deal.{Yes...it was excruciatingly painful those first several times!} Had to wear maxi pads first couple weeks for the bleeding now down to a pantiliner. Also ended up pushing out some stitches from the inside {not sure how or why} and they got infected so had to go in and have them removed. I think I have made a pretty good recovery considering how extremely painful it was those first couple weeks. Also took myself off hydrocodone as it was a viscious cycle of getting constipated by those then overloading on stool softener and laxatives. I have 6 kids and all of these problems started with first sons birth, so I am hoping after the healing process I can finally be done with all this!! Wish you all good healing!
Re: hemorroidectomyI'm just curious, why did you have the surgery so soon after delivery? also, how long did it take you to resume "normal bowel function?" good luck, I hope you are feeling better...that's alot to take on after having a baby@x I can't even imagine.....
Re: hemorroidectomyHi,
Just checking in to see how your recovery is doing. How do you feel now after all those months after surgery and has there been any improvements since?
