My experience of Hemorroidectomy done 10-1-09I am a 46 year old male in good health. I went to my Internal Medicine Doctor 2 years ago for extreme bleeding following a BM on multiple occasions, and he sent me for a Colonoscopy and then to a Colorectal surgeon My wife is an Oncologist who knows all of the Doctors in our city, so when I meet with the Colorectal surgeon everything was very accommodating and I was expecting that he would have to band some hemorrhoids and that would be it. Following the exam he told me I had extreme external and internal hemorrhoids and would need a hemorroidectomy without a doubt and sooner than later. Well, I waited 2 years because the recovery time of 8-10 weeks was more than I could afford with a 1 year old child and another child on the way - not to mention work related obligations.
I had the procedure on the 1st of October 2009, and as a courtesy he put in the hospital overnight even though it is customarily an outpatient procedure. The first night was just morphine injections and I really had very little pain to speak of, although of course was sore and had difficulty in getting around. When I went home the following day I definitely had discomfort and it took 2 days prior to having my first BM which was not pleasant, but not the scream out loud experience I had previously read about. In the ensuing days I only took 3 baths and then began to just shower as normal, and have not been in the bath since. Within five days I was able to move around pretty well, and cut back on the meds almost completely. It is now 16 days into the recovery and I am able to function really just about normally, without any meds or pain. I have not experienced any bleeding or pain during BM and everything is back to normal. I meet with the Surgeon on Monday for my check up, and I guess I need to tell him he is very good at what he does. After reading all of these forums prior to the procedure I had planned on a living hell, but I must say that it just was not as bad as I expected - even though I was informed that my case was very severe.
