Should my 6 year old have surgery? Please help.

My 6 year old appears to have an ingunial hernia. He has a small bulge that comes and goes. It's not constant. When we took him to our pediatrician it wasn't present but we described what we have seen and she recommended surgery. He has no bathroom issues. He is regular. He has no discomfort or other symptoms. We do not have insurance and I haven't been able to get a straight answer from hospitals or surgeons about a price for the procedure. Only that it would be somewhere between 6-10K but we would want to see him first and that visit would be somewhere between $150-$500. I don't want to be cheap with the health of my son but I also don't want to throw away money for the sake of being afraid. I have found some listings of surgical centers who offer flat pricing for such procedures but I just don't know if those places are safe and reliable. I would appreciate any input.
