Preoperative tests such as a blood test, urinalysis, and possibly an EKG may be performed a few days before the scheduled surgery, depending on the patient's health.

Some medications must be discontinued prior to the operation, such as drugs that "thin" the blood (e.g., Coumadin®, aspirin), and others must be withheld the day of surgery. This must be discussed with the physician as soon as the decision to operate is made.

Hi. I just had the Nissen Flundiplication procedure done on Tues., Jan. 4th, 2009! What a change already it has made for me! So thankful that my primary dr finally sent me to see a surgeon to speak to them about this procedure. I have suffered with bad GERD for 20+ years now, and was taking 3 different medications for it that were not helping whatsoever! My esophagus was already in bad shape with Barret's Esophagus due to this. The regualar GI drs wouldn't do anything but prescribe more medication for me. Just in 2 days time, I have not woke up feeling like I am literally drowning. I've had the pure liquid diet for the 1st 24 hrs; then progressed to pudding, etc. This morning, I ate 1/2 of a softly scrambled egg. I am not going to push eating too much at a time. After just a few bites of the egg, I was full.........after chewing it very well. Thank goodness maybe my life will be changed for the better now!
