There’s no end in sight…

Hi everyone, my name is Katherine. I am a school teacher and a 29-year-old “healthy” female, other than living with the repurcussions of what the doctor’s think is a slipped nissen fundoplication. I lived with chronic reflux-losing weight, throwing up, constant terrible taste in my mouth, not sleeping, and worst of all, losing my voice for almost two years, before deciding to have the Nissen done in January ‘07. It was a miracle cure for the first nine months after the s...Read the full article

Katherine,

My 7 year old son just had his Nissen re-done on Feb. 21 2008. He had his original surgery when he was 13 months old. We should have done his first surgery much earlier. He immediately was off of oxygen after the first surgery, but ended up with huge feeding problems that we did therapy for. We went through extensive feeding therapy and he had been eating a normal diet of anything he wanted.

He started having symptoms again in the last 3 months. An upper GI showed his Nissen had slipped and was loose. We did not hesitate to immediately have it re-done. He has some normal post-op swelling and pain. That combined with his previous feeding issues is making it hard for him to eat. He is getting IV nutrition for a couple of weeks until he can eat better. Even with all of this going on, he says he feels so much better and is glad he had the surgery.

We found agonizing and waiting around about the first surgery caused a cascade of problems. We were like you and the surgeon said needs to be done and another was like not sure. With the re-do we had a surgeon we trusted and really liked and just did it. We are happy and secure with our decision to re-do it.

I hope a clear decision comes to you soon. Even with the complications my son has had, he is a healthy, well adjusted child and champion swimmer.
