cord spasms s/p c-spine fusions

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Aug 13, 2001 2:18 am

I had a c-spine 4 level fusion 6 months ago. Recovery has been slow, but I feel stronger every day.
Besides pain management, my only other issue is my wrists keep having spasms that make my hands pop or jerk inwards.
My Neurologist has noticed that my hands and fingers curl inward toward my palm. I asked my Neurosurgeon about this and he said it was "cord spasms".
Now my Neurologist says that spams shouldn't be lasting that long.
Has anyone ever seen cord spasms that lasted longer than 6 months s/p surgery.
The spasms don't hurt, but they are a nusiance. I drop things too much at work and my hands and fingers quiver when I am extremely active.
I have tried Skelaxin and Neurontin-neither really worked.
My Neurologist has me scheduled for an MRI of my c-spine.
I have had x-rays of my neck every three months and the surgeron said the donor bones are have almost completely
taken.
I am at a loss right now. If the donor bone is compressing a nerve, will surgery be required?
Thanks,
Jennifer in Oklahoma

Hopefully the MRI will show that things have healed well, and that the spinal cord is not being compressed by any structure (the cord compression or irritation can cause spasticity sa you describe). If things look healthy, other medications, such as Zanaflex, Baclofen or muscle relaxers may be tried. Good luck.
