muscle spasms & short term memory trouble

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Mar 24, 2002 10:30 am

I was in an automobile accident in Nov.
I took a severe blow to my head. No cuts or fractures, but dazed for a few hours. MRI shows that I have a bone spur pressing on spinal cord in my neck and a ruptured disk in lower spinal area and two bulging. I had physical therapy for 6 weeks and still have severe discomfort in my neck and shoulder. Did not have this before accident. But within the last few weeks I am developing severe muscle cramps, worse at night, but occur throughout the day. These cramps affect any and all parts of my body, including my face, abs, ribs, hands, legs and feet. At night my legs are the worse, but all parts might be affected. The spasms in the face are scare me as I cannot swallow during the attacks. Thank goodness they are not as frequent. The ones in my upper abs are also horrible and occur fairly regularly. I am also experiencing a lot of forgetfulness. I am getting scared to drive, cook, or even trust myself to care for a barn full of horses,I run a boarding facility. I forget to lock gates and stalls. While driving it is like I forget exactly where I am going or I leave things on the stove and forget them. I can never remember where I put anything. This is becoming a very hard thing for me as I have always been a very active and depedable person. I often forget small words and cannot finish a sentence. Some days I am very depressed and cry for no reason.

This has all occured since the accident I want my life to get back on track. Could this be the results of this accident? What type of doctor should I be seeing. My orthopedic is good, but I do not think he understands the stress all of this putting me through. I get very little sleep due to the cramps. I am a certified physical fitness trainer who can no longer enjoy the active lifestyle I had just a few short months ago. I have returned to the gym, but I have a lot of discomfort in the neck and I fear dropping a weight or injuring something further with these muscle cramps. I have lived a fitness lifestyle for 22yrs and understand nutrition and fluid intake, etc. I have that part undercontrol, but no relief.

Any recommendations will be appreciated.
Thank you very much.

Some people involved in automobile accidents will describe some of the symptoms that you are describing. I would suggest that you plan to see a neurologist., expecially with the description of the cognitive problems and muscle complaints. The neurologist will decide whether tests such as MRI of the brain or others need to be done. There are many different types of medications and other treatments for the muscular pain that may be recommended, depending on your exam findings. Good luck.
