Tarlov Cyst and Thecal SacI recently had an MRI that indicated two items that I have not been able to find much information about. I intend to ask my DR. to provide input on this however I am trying to do a bit of research so I can ask better questions during my visit.
First - my MRI indicates that I have a Tarlov Cyst to the right of midline at about S2. What causes a Tarlov Cyst? Can this cyst grow or rupture and what other problems can it cause? Secondly, my L4-5 disc is desiccated and demonstrates a central protrusion that abuts and at best minimally deforms the thecal sac. Could this be a potential cause of low back pain? What damage can be done by this and how is it treated (if at all)? Finally, could either of these items cause problems during pregnancy? Thanks, P F
Re: Tarlov Cyst and Thecal SacTarlov cysts are fluid filled structures (containing spinal fluid) that are located around the sheath, or covering of the nerve roots in the spine. In most cases, they are found when imaging studies are done, but often cause no symptoms, and do not result in clinical abnormalities. In some cases, if they involve multiple nerve roots, become very large or are thought to be responsible for the problems that are present, they may need to be removed. The L4 L5 dessication means that the disc shows some degeneration, and the bulging in this region is a common finding. It sounds like the disc does not put any pressure on exiting nerve roots but rests or mildly touches the thecal sac (which is the spinal fluid filled sac holding the nerve roots); this would not require surgical treatment. but these findings could result in some back pain. It is unlikely any pregnancy problems would arise because of these things, although back pain in preganancy is fairly common.
